Discovering Prague

Prague has by far the most stylish and international nightlife for gay people in Eastern Europe, with more than 30 different gay bars clubs, sex clubs, cafes and more.

People here like to party. They also have some of the finest beers in the world. Combine this with the locals outgoing and uninhibited personalities and their Bel Ami porn-star-like looks and you are in for a great time whenever you choose to visit the city.

Exploring the city and the gay district of Vinohrady

Prague is a city of hills and straddles the magnificent River Vltava. The main historic centre is pedestrianised and very easy to navigate. You can spend hours wondering along the medieval streets taking in the wide range of shops and boutiques, always discovering something new around the next corner. And if you don’t fancy walking, why not try taking a horse-drawn carriage or even a tour on a vintage Skoda convertible.

Most of the gay clubs and trendy cafes can be found in Vinohrady. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach this fashionable district by Taxi.

The river makes its way through the busiest districts of the Old Town known as Staré Mesto, the New Town Nové Mesto and the Jewish Quarter (Josefov) on the right bank, while the Castle District know as Hradcany and Malá Strana are nestled into the steep slopes of the left-bank.

While there is no gay district in Prague, there are many bars and saunas dotted around the old town. Most of the gay clubs and trendy cafes can be found in Vinohrady. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach this fashionable district by Taxi. Alternatively you can take one of the many trams which run throughout the day (hourly after midnight). It is an efficient and cheap way of making your way around the city as well as taking in the sights and sounds of the surrounding neighbourhoods.

  • Where to Stay

Most of the best hotels are located either in or close to Prague’s old town. The gay bars and clubs are just a short taxi ride away. Prague is a year-round destination so you should book in advance especially if your stay coincides with a major holiday event.

Much of your time will be spent exploring the Medieval streets of the old town. Great for restaurants, antiques and Czech beer.

The Old Town, Charles Bridge and the Castle

Without a doubt, the dramatic Old Town Square is the focal point of the city. It oozes charm and character with the stunning 14th century Tyn Church casing shadows over the entire city. The famous Old Town hall with its Astronomical Click is one of the most photographed attractions in the city. On the hour, hundreds of visitors will stop at the same spot, waiting for the bell to strike. Our tip, wait until 12 noon for the “Walk of the Apostles”.

An interesting way to take in all that the city has to offer is to follow the traditional coronation route of the Bohemian Kings. Also know as the “Royal Way”

An interesting way to take in all that the city has to offer is to follow the traditional coronation route of the Bohemian Kings. Also know as the “Royal Way”, it begins at the 15th century Powder Tower, built as part of the town’s early defenses and the Municipal House and Semetana Concert Hall, one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. Just follow the silver signs directing you through the old town and onward to Prague Castle. The route can be busy but you can always meander through some of the side streets, discovering pretty parks, courtyards and other charming sights.

As you continue on your tour its hard not to escape the rather grand Charles Bridge. It is the perfect place to stop and take in the breathtaking views of the city, on both sides. Soak up the atmosphere as you pass street vendors selling paintings, jewelry and souvenirs together with musicians, street artists and performers.

As you cross the bridge into the Lesser Town or Mala Straná you will encounter many upscale restaurants and art galleries. This was the former aristocratic quarter of Prague so don’t be surprised as you pass may baroque castles and palaces.

This is the perfect area to stop for a bite to eat as you will need all your strength to make your way up narrow and winding streets to the Hradcany neighbourhood where you you will come upon Prague Castle. As you make your way up Petrin Hill look out for the Lookout Tower, a miniature copy of the Eiffel Tower.

At the entrance to the Castle you will find the National Gallery. It has an impressive collection, including some beautiful works by Van Gough. The Castle itself is a maze of courtyards leading to St. Vitus’s Cathedral and the Romanesque St. George Chapel, both worth a visit. When you’re finished sightseeing, take the old castle steps know as the Staré zamské zchody back down to the river and feast your eyes on the sea of red-tiled roofs of Prague . From late Spring to late Autumn you should make it a point to stop at the Wallenstein Gardens.

Josefov District

The upscale district of Josefov, Prague’s old Jewish Quarter is home to the city’s upscale shopping street, Parízská. This tree lined boulevard is home to familiar designer brands including Dolce and Gabanna, Prada, Gucci and more. The area is also famous for its fashionable restaurants, designer jewelry stores and local emerging designers.

Gay Nightlife in Prague

Most of Prague’s gay venues are in Vinohrady a 20 minute walk from the tourist areas. A taxi to the neighbourhood should cost you no more than EUR 10. Most people begin their night at Friends Bar, located half way between the old town and Vinohrady. Open every night, the bar gets busy around 11pm and especially so from Thursdays to Sundays. The venue is quite mixed with guys and girls of all ages.

Escort Bar, Escape is popular with guys who are looking for some company at a price. Drink prices are higher, however the erotic shows are entertaining and the escorts are obliging, providing of course, that you pay for their company. Agree in advance what you are looking for and how much you are willing to pay and your night should go smoothly.

Prague is full of sexy young guys looking to make some extra cash. Drakes, a cruisy club with a hooker bar attached is another alternative. Here you can hook-up with one of the escorts or go on a journey through maze of porn cabins and dungeons and make out with tourists and locals looking for a good time for free.

Alcatraz is popular with bears and leather guys and hosts regular underwear and nude party nights. Saunas are busy after work and when the bars close. Babyonia is one of the most popular due to its convenient location in the Old Town.

Termix is the place to party late into the night and becomes very busy on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday Nights. Its a compact venue so even with a few hundred people, the club feels busy. On Club (Vinohradska 40), the former home of the Valentino club is a gay dance mega-club on three levels with a summertime terrace, two discos and a large lounge. The club is open until 5am with busy darkrooms, and a subterranean cruise labyrinth including stone caverns.
